**The NY HELPS (Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Program Statewide) is a New York State program that allows civil service agencies to hire qualified permanent employees quickly and without requiring them to take a competitive civil service exam. It was created to help agencies fill critical vacancies by streamlining the appointment process, though candidates must still meet all other minimum qualifications for the job. 
 
 12-month positions receive paid holidays, sick & personal days, earn vacation time, are eligible for health and dental insurance and membership in the NYS Retirement System.

Laborer, P/T12 month position

Distinguishing Features of the Class

The work involves performing routine manual labor, requiring physical endurance and a willingness to perform a variety of routine and repetitive tasks. Direct supervision is received from a variety of higher-ranking employees who create work assignments and review work completed.

Typical Work Activities include but are not limited to:

  • Working independently and in conjunction with head custodians, custodians, maintenance mechanics, groundworkers, and other classifications to complete tasks.
  • Completes work orders and miscellaneous tasks as assigned by supervisors.
  • Conducts snow removal using a variety of equipment and tools.
  • Lifts and moves bags of 50 lb. ice melt, treats walking surfaces with ice melt
  • Mows and trims grass in the vicinity of the school facility.
  • Maintains grounds, conducts light landscaping, collects trash and litter.
  • Strips, scrubs, cleans, buffs, and burnishes floors with a variety of equipment.
  • Apply floor finish
  • Conducts preventative maintenance. Under supervision, guidance, through experience conducts minor repairs including but not limited to: electrical, plumbing, HVAC, mechanical, drywall and plaster, painting, and flooring, etc.
  • Aides in roof inspection and maintenance.
  • Uses step ladders, extension ladders, lifts, and scaffolding to accomplish tasks at heights.
  • Prepare the facility for a wide variety of athletic, community education, school, and public events. Conducts take down and cleanup.
  • Moves boxes, supplies, furniture, and other items with the use of a variety of moving equipment and tools. Acts as a messenger, makes deliveries of packages and miscellaneous items
  • Dustmops, sweeps, and mops floors, corridors, stairwells, cafeterias, lavatories, locker-rooms, and other surfaces.
  • Cleans and maintains entry ways, to include vacuuming entry rugs.
  • Uses a variety of chemicals to clean.
  • Cleans lavatories, locker-rooms, cafeterias, gymnasiums, and other building areas.
  • Cleans rooms as assigned by supervisor.

Full Performance Knowledges, Skills, Abilities, & Personal Characteristics

Working knowledge of the maintenance and repair of buildings, fixtures and equipment, and all tasks listed under “typical work activities”. An ability to make a variety of simple repairs and adjustments to buildings and equipment. Is capable of working independently and as a member of a team. Has the ability to lift medium weights and a willingness to perform routine manual work. Has a willingness to work under all weather conditions. Holds physical endurance and a physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

Maintenance Mechanic Helper

Distinguishing Features of the Class

The Maintenance Mechanic Helper performs semi-skilled maintenance, repair, and facility support tasks in school district buildings and grounds. This is fundamentally a training and developmental position, intended to provide broad, hands-on experience across multiple building trades. The long-term expectation is that the employee will progressively gain the knowledge and skills necessary to advance to the position of Maintenance Mechanic.

Work is performed under the direct supervision of the Maintenance Mechanic Crew Chief, while the Helper may also receive task-level guidance and direction from Maintenance Mechanics during assigned jobs.

The role supports district operations by assisting with repairs, performing basic trade tasks, and carrying out routine and assigned maintenance duties. Related work is performed as required.

Typical Work Activities

The employee may be required to perform a range of semi-skilled or unskilled tasks, often in a training capacity to build foundational skills across the trades, including but not limited to:
• Carpentry and general building repairs
• Electrical
• HVAC
• Masonry
• Painting and surface preparation
• Plumbing
• Assisting Maintenance Mechanics on assigned projects
• Participating in on-the-job training across building trades
• Performing other maintenance and repair tasks as assigned
 
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Personal Characteristics
- Interest in learning skilled trades and developing toward Maintenance Mechanic–level competency
- Working knowledge of basic building trades (carpentry, mechanical systems, painting, masonry, etc.)
- Ability to safely and effectively use hand tools and power tools
- Ability to perform semi-skilled manual work with limited direct supervision
- Ability and willingness to learn new trade methods, procedures, and best practices
- Ability to understand and carry out written and verbal instructions
- Reliability, integrity, and strong work ethic
